What have Gerta & Alex (and YourNegotiations) been up to?

Hi Reader,

Hope you’ve been well since we last saw you at one of our negotiation Q&As, our negotiations Facebook group, or on LinkedIn and Instagram!

Here’s what we’ve been up to in the last few months.

Personal Front

As you may know, in addition to being cofounders, we’re also married (some people miss that and are surprised we take late night/early morning calls together 😆).

After 12+ years together, married for 9 years, the stars finally aligned for a cross-family get-together last month, and Alex’s family visited my (Gerta’s) family in Albania.

We had a nice dinner with all the Chois and the Malajs, including some traditional Albanian dances that Alex absolutely crushed. Here’s a picture from that night, and feel free to DM us for the video of Alex’s dance moves. 🕺

Business Front

Our business, YourNegotiations.com, which helps people negotiate job offers or business deals, is steadily growing and, dare we say, thriving.

Here are 3 posts we’ve shared recently that you might find helpful:

  1. Gerta gave the endnote talk at the Bay Area Career Fest. Here are some important tactics we shared there.
  2. Gerta’s reaction to a Harvard Business Review article, The Most Effective Negotiation Tactic According to AI
  3. Our tips on how to deal with a passive-aggressive party when negotiating.

Take Our Money!

After some experimentation with various marketing efforts, we came to a hypothesis that our marketing budget is better spent on our community (that’s you) rather than on social media ads.

We’re formalizing this as an experiment that we’re cheekily calling Take Our Money, and we’re inviting people (you) to take our money pretty easily.

If you’re curious, here’s how:

The experiment:

For every client/student/deal you send our way, you get 10% of what they pay us and they get a 10% discount. And we get a new client without running exhausting and expensive ads! It’s a win-win-win, which is aligned with our negotiations philosophy: to find a tide that lifts all boats.

Real-world example:

We recently paid someone $1080 for referring their colleague who became our 1:1 client (see here for the math breakdown). It only took them an intro email. We then do a free call to see if it’s a mutually good fit.

How do I take part?

  • Think of at least one person or community who could benefit from our free call on negotiations.
  • Send them the proposed language below.
  • If they opt in, you can intro us via email
(alex@yournegotiations.com). Or send us their email address and we’ll reach out directly.
  • If we end up working with them, we’ll send you your referral payment! 💰

Hey, how’s your job search/business deal going? Sharing a free resource I came across that you may find helpful. You can schedule a free consultation call with Gerta and Alex to get some negotiation tips at https://calendly.com/alexhapki/call.

They're negotiation experts and run YourNegotiations.com, a company that offers 1:1 consulting and online courses to help people negotiate job offers and business deals.

For transparency, if you end up working with them, I’d get 10% of the amount you’d end up paying them. And you’d get a 10% discount as well.

They’re ex-LinkedIn, ex-Instagram, have trained with world-class negotiators at Harvard and MIT when they were studying there, and their clients improve their job offers by up to $550K, and their business deals by up to 35%.

They primarily work on a success fee model where they get paid only if they help you get a better deal - they currently charge 15% of the difference between the initial and final deal.

We’ll be sending out regular updates and tips. Stay tuned!

Best,

Gerta & Alex

Hi Reader, Andrew Chen, a General Partner at a16z, recently shared five tips for founders who are hiring their first team after a seed round. As founders ourselves, we think these are great. But as negotiation advisers for job seekers, we find one of these to be very dangerous for your career. If you’re a job candidate, you want to be careful if a company ever proposes what Andrew suggests in Tip #4. Andrew's advice is for founders to interview for the actual work. He writes that "the ideal...

Hi Reader, Earlier in his career, Alex interviewed for a role he was really excited about. The company was a market-leading rocketship, he'd report directly to the founders, and the recruiter was friendly and quick to respond. Alex noticed though there was one line the recruiter repeated on every single call, from the first screen to the check-ins between interview rounds: "Just so you know, we have a company policy where the first offer we give is the best and final. We don't negotiate...

Hi Reader, Last Thursday, we hosted a live panel on negotiations for founders as part of a16z's SF Tech Week. Most founders don't think of their day as a negotiation. As Connor (CEO of Hyperspell) said while welcoming everyone, "Fundraising and sales and hiring, and basically everything you do all the time is a negotiation." Your cofounder split, design partners, vendors, key hires, and someday an acquisition are all governed by the same negotiation dynamics. Below are the key principles we...
