The new tech hiring reality: Are you ready for 2025?

Hi Reader,

The tech job market is about to undergo a significant shift, and if you're planning to negotiate a job offer in 2025, it's crucial to be prepared.

Meta has just announced their next round of layoffs, scheduled for February 10th.

This time, the focus is different from previous layoffs.

These cuts target "low performers" across teams, as detailed in a memo from Mark Zuckerberg. This isn't just about reducing costs, it's about reshuffling talent.

Adding to the complexity, TikTok might also be facing job cuts, with over 7,000 U.S.-based employees potentially at risk.

Many of these individuals were previously laid off by Meta in 2022-2023 and had moved to TikTok.

Here’s what this means for the 2025 job market:

  • Interview processes are becoming longer and more rigorous.
  • Employers are gaining more leverage in negotiations.
  • The competition for each role is becoming more fierce.
  • Initial job offers may be lower than expected.

However, having helped many professionals navigate offer negotiations under various market conditions, I've learned that preparation is more crucial than ever.

Here are 3 key strategies to effectively navigate this market:

  1. Build multiple options
Even in a tough market, employers compete for top talent. Engage in parallel interview processes to enhance your leverage.

  2. Master the timing
Align your interview timelines to show potential employers that other companies are interested in you.

  3. Know your value
While initial offers might be lower, your final offer still depends significantly on your negotiation skills.
