Inside our negotiation engine: how we help you win

Hi Reader,

One of the most common questions we get is: “What’s it like working with you?” or “What does a negotiations consulting service look like?”

We thought it would be helpful to provide a detailed walkthrough of the experience you’ll have if we ever end up working together on your offer negotiations.

Quick caveat

Before we dive in, we want to note that people will sometimes ask if we can help them over a single call or on an hourly basis. Though we used to do this, one-off help isn't sufficient to go deep enough where we can provide meaningful, actionable advice, and our client bandwidth no longer allows for this. We’ve found that our process delivers big results when we work with you holistically, without limiting our support.

The results speak for themselves. Our 2025 clients have spanned a wide range of:

  • Functions, from product managers, engineers, designers, strategy & ops, data scientists, sales, partnerships, even lawyers
  • Experience levels, from mid-level ICs to even a CEO and a few c-suite execs
  • Companies, from early-stage startups, pre-IPO rocket ships like Carta and Stripe, public companies like Google, NVIDIA, Capital One, Netflix, Reddit, PayPal, Salesforce, and Walmart, and even investment banks, family offices, private equity firms, and law firms

On average, these clients saw a ~20% boost in first-year compensation, with increases ranging from $10K to $175K in first-year comp on top of their initial offers.

Okay, here's how our process works:

Initial free consultation call

First, you’ll book a free call with us if you’re in the job search or expecting upcoming negotiations. Alex will get on a 15-min call with you to better understand your situation and if we’re a mutually good fit to work together. We may not be able to help you if you’ve already given away too much leverage (this most commonly happens if you’ve already started negotiating yourself after receiving a written offer letter, so book a call with us early in your job search!).

360° onboarding

Once you sign our client agreement, we send you an onboarding survey to gather full context on your situation - what employers you’re interviewing and negotiating with, what offers you have, what has been said and done so far between you and the recruiter, were you referred by anyone, and so much more.

We’ll also ask you to get crystal clear on your priorities, i.e. do you care most about cash compensation, equity, certain benefits, work/life flexibility, etc. We’ll craft your personal negotiation strategy together factoring in what’s most important to you as the negotiations unfold.

Getting all this info, even the small and seemingly insignificant details, is critical because we can often deduce how much and how hard you can push without jeopardizing your offer based on reading in between the lines of your communications with the employer.

Live strategy support

We’ll then get on as many calls as you need to strategize together at every point of the way, including co-drafting emails (we have lots of templates/language that we’re constantly updating based on what we’re seeing work in this current market; for the record, we never use AI for this - more on this on a future Gentle Power podcast episode), preparing for calls, practicing live negotiations and responses, and more. We'll essentially tell you exactly what to do and say with every company you're negotiating/interviewing with until you sign an offer, no matter how long it takes. We make the whole experience as stress-free as possible.

We’ll set up a WhatsApp group with both of us so that we’re always reachable to help you tackle anything in real time (negotiations sometimes move very fast, so we’re always on standby if you need to reach us).

Mastering negotiation skills for real life

Our guidance will be tailored to your situation of course, and we'll provide instruction and feedback on honing your negotiation style in your own voice and preferred approach. Our work together will go beyond just instruction and theory, but you'll see and learn for yourself how to effectively negotiate, which you can apply to your future negotiations as well.

In that vein, we’ll send you a series of videos we only share with clients that cover our unique negotiation process from beginning to end. You will have access to these videos even after our work together is done so that you can reference them for your own future negotiations.

Our goal isn’t to just handhold you through the live negotiations you hired us for, but to leave you better off as a stronger negotiator for all your future needs.

Our pricing - we win when you win

We work on a pricing model where the incentives are aligned: most of the payment depends on if we help you get a better deal. We currently charge a flat fee + 10% of the difference between the initial and final job offer's first-year comp value.

If you are in the job search or expecting upcoming negotiations, book a free call with us here to get free tips for your situation, explore if we’re a good fit for working together, and learn how our pricing could look like for your situation!

Warmly,

Hi Reader, This week’s Gentle Power episode (Youtube | Spotify | Apple Podcasts) hit on a truth we see over and over: you can be brilliant, accomplished, and trained in negotiation, and still mishandle a high-stakes job offer. Our guest is a close friend who went to a top business school, was taking a negotiation class while she was in the middle of her own job offer process, and has a career full of negotiating multi-million-dollar deals. By all accounts, she should have been bulletproof....

Hi Reader, This week on Gentle Power, we had a very special guest: Kevin Houng - an HR leader, former employment attorney, and one of Alex’s longest friends (think Halo marathons on the first Xbox back in 2001 😅). Kevin has advised executives at major companies, scaled startups through rapid growth, and overseen compensation strategies at organizations from 10 people to 10,000. In short: he’s been on the other side of the negotiation table, and he knows exactly how companies think about pay....

Hi Reader, We spoke to a divorce mediator… about negotiations!! 😆 Some quick backstory: A few weeks ago, Alex opened his laptop to start the work day. Sitting at the top of his inbox was an email with the words “divorce mediator” in the subject line. He froze. Why was a divorce mediator emailing him? After a brief moment of panic, he opened the email and saw it was something entirely different. The sender, Joe Dillon, had stumbled upon our podcast, Gentle Power (YouTube | Spotify | Apple...
